Amazon Basin Nations Unite with Landmark Rainforest Protection Declaration
Eight countries of the Amazon Basin have collaboratively agreed on a significant new declaration, laying out a unified vision to protect the Amazon rainforest.
The summit, backed by major environmental organizations, presented recommendations for a Pan-Amazon network and bioeconomic workplan to the Amazon nations' leaders.
The Belem Declaration is lauded as a critical first step, immediate follow-up actions, policies, and strategies are urged to translate the declaration into tangible conservation outcomes.
Terra Global Launches RFP for Nature-based Solutions
Terra Global Capital has launched its Nature-based Solutions Request for Proposal (RFP) targeting projects and jurisdictional programs in tropical and subtropical emerging economies that seek Climate Finance.
The selected projects will undergo a Carbon Eligibility Assessment (CEA) to determine the potential for private sector Climate Finance. If viable, they may receive upfront investments and payment on performance through long-term VERR purchases, benefiting climate, social, and biodiversity.
The RFP is open to a diverse group including governments, NGOs, private entities, indigenous groups, and more.
BlackRock Partners with New Zealand Government For A Green Push
The New Zealand Government and US investment firm BlackRock are collaborating on a first-of-its-kind NZ$2 billion climate infrastructure fund aimed at supporting 100% renewable electricity generation in New Zealand.
The fund aims to provide New Zealand businesses with access to larger capital pools, promote the creation of skilled local jobs, and hasten the adoption of green energy options such as solar, wind, green hydrogen, and battery storage.
VVBs launch International Carbon Auditor Forum (ICAF)
The International Carbon Auditor Forum (ICAF) was recently launched at the Grow To Zero event in London, aiming to act as a knowledge bridge among Validation and Verification Bodies (VVBs), carbon standards, and project developers.
The ICAF looks forward to collaborations with notable programs such as Verra and the Global Carbon Council, with more VVB members soon to be announced.
Base Carbon, VNV Partner for Project Development In India
Base Carbon Inc. and Value Network Ventures Advisory Services (VNV) have collaborated to reforest degraded farmlands in Uttar Pradesh, India, targeting the planting of 6.5 million trees by the end of 2023.
The project, expected to run for 20 years, aims to generate over 1.6 million carbon credits, with an investment of approximately US$13.6 million spread over the next decade by Base Carbon.
Emphasizing community involvement, the initiative will not only sequester carbon but also enhance local food security, livelihoods, and resilience against climate impacts.
U.S. to Pay For Atmospheric Carbon Removals
The federal government is initiating a unique program, overseen by the Department of Energy, to pay companies to extract carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, pioneering a global first in combating climate pollution.
This carbon-removal effort, budgeted initially in the tens of millions, aligns with previous government strategies of accelerating critical sectors by acting as a significant purchaser, as witnessed with semiconductors and COVID-19 vaccines.
Current estimates suggest the global need for carbon removal could reach 10 billion tons annually by 2050. With costs ranging from $200 to $2,000 per ton today, achieving this could require over $1 trillion, equivalent to about 1% of the 2023 global GDP.
Climate Action Reserve Is Developing A Dominican Republic Livestock Protocol
The Climate Action Reserve is formulating the Dominican Republic Livestock Protocol to guide the quantification and verification of emission reductions from installing manure biogas control systems in dairy cattle and swine farms.
While 29% of Dominican territory is for livestock, only 27 digesters are in operation as of 2022, none being registered carbon capture projects; the new protocol aims to promote methane capture from manure lagoons.
SustainCERT and Regrow Ag Unite for GHG Emissions Solution in Agriculture
SustainCERT and Regrow Ag have announced a collaboration to offer a comprehensive solution for measuring, reporting, and verifying GHG emissions in agricultural supply chains. This aims to address the food and agriculture sector's significant contribution to global GHG emissions.
The partnership will integrate SustainCERT's innovative decarbonization solution, which allows companies to verify and co-invest in GHG reductions, with Regrow's platform that uses satellite data and machine learning to quantify on-farm GHG emissions. This will eliminate the previously manual and time-consuming process of transferring farm-based emissions data between platforms.
Bayer, GenZero, and Shell Energy Collaborate to Curb Methane Emissions in Indian Paddy Rice Cultivation
Bayer, GenZero, and Shell Energy are collaborating to reduce methane emissions in India's paddy rice cultivation.
Agriculture accounts for 24% of global GHG emissions; paddy rice cultivation is a significant methane contributor.
In line with its sustainability goals, Bayer promotes innovative farming techniques such as Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) and Alternate Wetting & Drying (AWD). These not only reduce GHG emissions from rice fields but also present opportunities for farmers to gain additional revenue through carbon credits. This all aligns with Bayer's ambitious target to cut in-field GHG emissions by 30% by the year 2030.
Eni UK, Stanlow Plan Major CO2 Storage Infrastructure Push
Eni UK and Stanlow Terminals have signed an MoU to develop projects focused on CO2 collection, shipping, and storage, with the aim to facilitate the transportation and storage of CO2 from various industrial sources.
The collaboration aims to expand Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) infrastructure, allowing a larger number of businesses to transport captured CO2 for storage in depleted gas fields, further supporting Essar Energy Transition's vision of establishing a leading integrated energy transition hub in Europe.
Essar Energy Transition plans to invest US$3.6 billion over five years in low-carbon projects, with notable investments in blue hydrogen, green ammonia, storage and pipeline infrastructure, and low carbon biofuels across the UK and India.
